HOOK, LINE, AND THINKER – an inside perspective

Greetings!

Today, non-profits are being asked to do more than ever, often with tighter resources, rising community need, and increasing pressure to communicate impact with clarity and confidence. At the same time, donors, partners, and boards want a sharper line of sight between mission, need, action, and measurable results.

That is exactly why we’ve launched AMPLIFY YOUR IMPACT, our new non-profit edition of Currents. This first issue focuses on one of the biggest performance drivers we see across nonprofits today: clarity in your case for support, donor journey, and proof of impact.

Lionfish works closely with mission-driven organizations and sees the same patterns surface again and again: strong missions held back by fuzzy messaging, fragmented stories, and donor communications that ask people to work too hard to understand what you do, why it matters now, and how they help.

Our new AMPLIFY YOUR IMPACT series is designed to help organizations move from good intentions to broader engagement and greater impact.

Our goal is simple: help nonprofits turn mission clarity into donor action and turn purpose into momentum. Each edition will share best practices, smart strategies, innovative tactics, and practical tools to help organizations clarify their case, strengthen donor connections, and inspire giving.

Thanks for the countless ways you show up for your community, may this series help your message travel farther, your fundraising go deeper, your events carry more purpose, and your outreach and engagement build the kind of lasting relationships needed to sustain your mission today and in the future.

With gratitude and excitement for what’s next,

Gloria Wildeman

What is winning right now in nonprofit marketing and fundraising?

Clearer language, tighter alignment, and fewer assumptions, the same three shifts we unpack in our new blog, “A Case for Clarity”.

Many nonprofit communications miss not because the mission is weak, but because the message asks too much of the audience.

Supporters should not have to work to figure out what the organization does, why the need is urgent, or how their gift changes the outcome.

The strongest organizations are simplifying their message, using more concrete proof, and building donor facing language that is emotional, specific, and easy to repeat.

Three strategies are standing out:

– Clarity: a sharper case for support: Start by evaluating the core story behind every campaign, appeal, presentation, and event so your mission, need, urgency, and donor role are instantly clear. We’ve created  a Clarity Scorecard” to help you do a quick evaluation..

– Make Sure Your Message Lands Every Time: Once the case is clear, align email, events, web, and social media around one message arc that builds belief over time, closing the gaps identified in our “5 Signs Your Message Is Losing Donors” guide.

– Reduce donor friction:  Remove any remaining friction by pairing stories with visible outcomes, human specifics, and a clear invitation to help, so donors never have to guess what happens next or why it matters.

If you’re wondering where to start, download the “Clarity Scorecard”, and evaluate whether your donors can instantly understand what you do, why it matters now, and how their gift changes the story.

Innovation doesn’t always mean flashy technology. Often, it means communicating the right thing more clearly, more consistently, and in a way that makes supporters feel both informed and motivated to support your mission.

Rotary Whidbey Westside:
UNITE FOR GOOD IN ACTION

Rotary Whidbey Westside’s recent gala shows what happens when an event is treated as a strategic storytelling moment, not just a fundraiser.

Anchored in the theme “Unite for Good,” the evening invited guests to see Rotary as a network of people turning service into action across Whidbey Island and around the world.

Jenny Andrews’ keynote on Rotary’s global impact on the fight to irradicate Malaria expanded that lens, connecting local generosity to life‑saving work in communities far beyond the island and giving guests a vivid picture of what “service above self” looks like on a global scale.

A clear throughline connected Rotary’s 7 Areas of Focus with tangible local outcomes, from mentoring youth and supporting families to advancing the club’s AED project, so the case for support felt both aspirational and immediate. Every element of the program worked in service of that story. Registration, mingling, auctions, entertainment, and the paddle raise were woven into a single narrative about participation, generosity, and shared commitment, rather than feeling like a string of isolated activities.

The result: a theme‑driven event that made it easy for supporters to see what’s at stake, feel why it matters now, and understand how their gift helps, turning one night into lasting momentum for both local projects and Rotary’s global impact.

Why support clarity matters more than ever

Many non-profit stories fall short not because the work is unimportant, but because donors cannot quickly tell what is at stake, why support is needed now, and what their gift will actually make possible. Mission statements may be inspiring, but if the case for support is vague, overly internal, or missing urgency, even important work can struggle to gain traction.

That’s why Lionfish created the Non-Profit Clarity Scorecard, a simple tool to help nonprofits evaluate whether their story clearly communicates mission, need, impact, urgency, donor role, audience fit, emotional connection, credibility, and call to action.

Paired with our ‘5 Signs Your Message Is Losing Donors’ guide, these tools give teams a fast, practical way to strengthen their case for support so every ask has a better chance to land and inspire audiences to act.

Download the Non-Profit Clarity Scorecard: A quick worksheet to help turn a fuzzy case into a fundable one. Use it to review your website copy, appeal letter, campaign page, donor deck, or case statement, and strengthen the message before your next big ask.

Food for thought…If donors scanned your story in 30 seconds, would they instantly understand the mission, the need, and why their support matters right now?

       THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP

AMPLIFIED IMPACT IN ACTION

Some of the most powerful stories we see come from what happens when nonprofits and businesses decide to pursue impact together.

When the partnership is grounded in clear purpose and aligned values, a mission doesn’t just gain another sponsor, it gains new channels, new champions, and new capacity to reach the people it serves.

Through Lionfish’s own Amplified Impact model, we’ve seen how strategic communications and thoughtful collaboration can multiply what’s possible for nonprofits and their corporate partners.

Bolder and Better Together

When a nonprofit and a business come together with shared purpose, support can go farther, stories can reach wider, and impact can deepen in ways neither could achieve alone. The examples below show how clear storytelling, visible outcomes, and consistent engagement can turn generosity into impact at scale.

Subaru of America and the ASPCA have partnered since 2008, with Subaru donating more than 41–43 million dollars to support animals in need and helping improve the lives of nearly 250,000–370,000 pets through rescue, transport, and adoption nationwide. Their long‑term commitment, paired with clear, pet‑focused storytelling and easy ways for customers to participate, has turned a corporate partnership into a recognizable, mission‑driven platform for animal welfare.

Aligned, a data center and technology company, partnered with the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to support breast cancer patients through hands‑on volunteer events. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Aligned employees worked with NBCF to assemble HOPE Kits, care packages filled with practical items and handwritten notes, for people undergoing treatment, and their ongoing efforts earned Aligned NBCF’s 2026 Community Partner Award. It’s a strong example of how a clear, human‑centered concept can invite employees into the mission and keep impact tangible.
